The UK’s ACR Journal has nominated ammonia products and projects by Glasgow-based Star Refrigeration to receive three of its annual awards.
The UK’s ACR Journal has nominated Glasgow-based Star Refrigeration to receive three of its annual awards. The triple nomination is for the categories of Refrigeration Product of the Year, Best Refrigeration Project of the Year, and Environmental Initiative of the Year.
Star’s Azanechiller 2.0 is up for the Refrigeration Product of the Year award. It uses 90% less ammonia than traditional ammonia-based pump circulation systems.
As a pre-packaged low-charge ammonia chiller, the Azanechiller 2.0 “sets a new benchmark in chiller performance with efficiency figures that are up to 146% higher than the [EU] Eco-Design Directive requirement for medium-temperature chillers, up to 100% higher for comfort cooling chillers and up to 74% higher for high-temperature chillers,” said Star in a press release.
The chiller has been used in data centre cooling, food manufacturing, process cooling, ice and leisure facilities and temperature controlled storage.
Azanechiller 2.0 at heart of indoor winter sports venue
Star’s Azanechiller 2.0 installation at Snozone Milton Keynes has been nominated for the accolade of Best Refrigeration Project of the Year. After installing two of the chillers in 2017, Snozone Milton Keynes – an indoor skiing and snowboarding venue that ranks among the UK’s top indoor leisure attractions – is celebrating multiple savings on electricity and CO2 emissions.
Two ammonia-based Star AA415MTE-1 Azanechiller 2.0 units replaced the original chillers based on R404A, an HFC blend being phased down under the EU’s F-Gas Regulation. The Azanechiller 2.0 boasts a capacity of 360 kW and chills ethylene glycol from -10°C to -13°C.
Vahterus plate and shell heat exchangers help to minimise the ammonia charge to only 85 kg per chiller. Acoustic enclosures around the compressor/motor assembly combined with EC condenser fans present the lowest noise outlay possible for the retrofit installation.
In only four months, Snozone saved 56% on electricity bills and reduced CO 2e emissions thanks to the efficiency of the Azanechiller 2.0, which exceeds Europe’s Eco-Design Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) requirements by 80%.
“The team has worked really hard re-engineering the next generation of Azanechiller to ensure increased efficiency, lower refrigerant charge and lower total cost of ownership. It’s fantastic to see this high-performing technology recognised by the industry.”

Logistics depot up for award
Star’s partnership with logistics company Gist has been shortlisted for Environmental Initiative of the Year award. Two brand new Azanechillers were installed at cold storage company Gist’s new logistics depot in Chesterfield, England. The chillers use 90% less ammonia than traditional ammonia-based pump circulation systems.
“This translates to Gist Chesterfield reducing their carbon footprint by removing 117 tonnes of CO2 per year in emissions, compared to similar sized refrigeration plants across the continent,” according to Star.
“Once again we’re really excited to be shortlisted among some of the best names in the business for the National ACR and Heat Pump Awards 2019,” said Dr. Rob Lamb, group sales and marketing director, Star Refrigeration.
“The team has worked really hard re-engineering the next generation of Azanechiller to ensure increased efficiency, lower refrigerant charge and lower total cost of ownership. It’s fantastic to see this high-performing technology recognised by the industry,” said Lamb.
The awards ceremony will be held on 24 January at the Midland Hotel in Manchester.
