The Consumer Goods Forum commits to climate-friendly refrigeration

At the kick-off of the climate talks in Cancun yesterday, world-leading consumer brands announced their plan to cease the use of HFCs in new large refrigeration installations and point-of-sale units as of 2015 and replace them with natural refrigerants. The Forum further pledged to use its collective influence to encourage its supply base to develop natural refrigerant technologies.

"This is the first time that the entire sector has aligned around the importance of taking action to accelerate the move to climate-friendly refrigeration. The technologies exist today for our sector to significantly reduce the direct and indirect emissions of the refrigeration equipment we use. This initiative by The Consumer Goods Forum demonstrates our commitment to action", noted Muhtar Kent of The Coca-Cola Company and Lars Olofsson of Carrefour.

Encouraging the development of natural refrigerant technologies

According to the CGF Board Resolution on Sustainable Refrigeration, the Forum recognises that “barriers exist to wide scale adoption of more climate-friendly refrigeration, namely legislative restrictions in some markets, availability, cost, safety, maintenance and servicing. We will work to overcome those barriers by strengthening existing collaborative platforms and initiatives. We also will use our collective influence to encourage our supply base to develop natural refrigerant technologies that meet our business demand under commercially viable conditions”.

Who will be delivering the refrigeration commitment?

Refrigeration was one of the action areas of the twofold climate protection initiative pledged by the Forum, the other one being deforestation. The team of the Forum member companies charged with delivering the refrigeration pledges is co-chaired by Unilever and Tesco and includes:
