Nestlé’s regional distribution centre in Metz employs NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration

A 22,000 m2 regional distribution centre of Nestlé in Metz, France employs a NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system. Ammonia and CO2 cascade refrigeration has been more and more used by the company in its factories, storage and distribution centres worldwide.

Nestlé established a NH3/CO2 Distribution Centre in Metz, France. The new regional distribution centre consists 22,000 m2 of warehouse and 665 m2 office space for 135 employees. 
 
The distribution centre will be used to replace the 12,000m² warehouse in Woippy (Moselle). The total investment of the environmental friendly distribution centre is €6.5 million, which is supported by the French local government in Lorraine.
 
According to the Regional Logistics Manager of Nestlé, David Milhau, the construction of the distribution centre in Metz responds primarily to their desire to regionalise its distribution network in the region.
 
NH3/CO2 cascade system handles 45 tons of products per day 
 
An NH3/CO2 refrigeration system is used to provide refrigeration and cooling in the distribution centre. The regional distribution centre can handle 45 tons of Nestlé’s fresh and frozen products from across the region per day. It has 30 truck platforms, which could deliver 12 tons of products per day. The company has made NH3/CO2 cascade systems the technology of choice to improve operating efficiency and reduce the impact on the environment.
 
This NH3/CO2 solution meets the latest industrial standards of environment protection and offers the advantages of:
 
  • Increased safety and facilitating supervision: reduce the NH3 load which is confined to a special NH3 machine room
  • The use of natural refrigerant CO2 and ammonia contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions with negligible impact on global warming
 
Ammonia and CO2 cascade for refrigeration in Nestlé’s business worldwide
 
In other regions of the world, Nestlé also uses ammonia and CO2 cascade technology in the production and distribution of its ice cream, frozen/chilled foods and freeze-dried instant coffee. For example, Nestlé’s Himeji factory implemented Japan's first cascade refrigeration system using CO2 and ammonia refrigerants in 2005. The system is used for the freeze-drying of NESCAFÉ GOLD BLEND. Shimada factory in Japan also installed an ammonia and CO2 cascade refrigeration unit in May 2011. For its coffee freeze drying plant in Kuban in Southern Russia, Nestlé adopted a CO2/NH3 cascade system, which is the biggest in Russia.
