Low-GWP alternatives in spotlight of the Climate Protection Technologies conference in Bangkok

On 21-22 July, an international conference ‘Advancing Ozone & Climate Protection Technologies: Next Steps’ took place in Bangkok, Thailand, just before the 32nd Meeting of the Open-Ended Working Group kicked off. Climate-friendly alternatives to harmful hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), powerful global warming gases, were in focus of the conference.

The two-day conference has been supported by the recently established Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) and organised by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United States Government, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the Alliance for Responsible Atmospheric Policy. As part of the event, around 30 companies are exhibiting technologies using refrigerants with low global warming potential (GWP) at the Alternative Technologies Exhibition between 21 and 24 July.

Technology and policy presentations

A number of presentations by national, regional and international policy-makers, technical experts from industry and academia, and other stakeholders emphasized the need to advance the transition towards zero- and low-GWP alternatives in refrigeration and air-conditioning industry while addressing a wide range of technology and policy aspects:
  • Barriers to adopting technologies with low-GWP refrigerants and ways to overcome them
  • International, national and regional policies addressing HFCs
  • Sectors and applications in which low-GWP alternatives are currently available
  • Sectors and applications in which climate-friendly refrigerants are being developed and expected timeline for their adoption
  • Reducing refrigerant charge sizes and minimising leakage rates

Parties to Montreal Protocol to discuss TEAP report and amendment proposals

The conference was organised ahead of the 32nd Meeting of the Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG) of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol held on 23-27 July in Bangkok. Some of the topics on the agenda include:
  • Amendment proposals to the Montreal Protocol proposed by North America regarding phase-down of HFCs
  • A report assessing the availability, cost and potential of alternatives to ozone-depleting substances prepared by the Technology and Economic Assessment Panel (TEAP)

Innovators with ammonia solutions

At the exhibition that was held in parallel to the conference, ammonia21.com presented brochures and other material from their innovative partner companies that manufacture solutions using natural refrigerants for cooling and heating. These international companies are already successful for many years with viable, reliable and efficient systems and components using for example ammonia as the refrigerant, including: Advansor, Alfa Laval, Danfoss, Dorin, Mayekawa.
