UPDATED: ATMOsphere Europe 2011 – accelerating market penetration of natural refrigerants

By Sabine Lobnig, Oct 24, 2011, 16:31 3 minute reading

On the 11-12 October, Brussels will host the third edition of ATMOsphere, an international, interactive workshop dedicated exclusively to natural refrigerants. This year the focus is on Europe, and will include two policy sessions to discuss the recently launched European Commission F-Gas Regulation consultation and new Eco-Design requirements. The packed programme also includes end-user panels, moderated workshops and technology sessions. UPDATE: All prese

The event provides a key opportunity for industry and policy experts to come together to discuss the technical, economic and political context impacting the natural refrigerant market, and the future of ammonia, hydrocarbon and carbon dioxide technologies. With over 160 participants, and close to 30 speakers, ATMOsphere Europe 2011 will include presentations by leading European retailers and real-life case studies that demonstrate the advantages of natural refrigerant working fluids.

The picture galleries of all sessions can be found on the ATMO.org website or by clicking here.

Event Highlights

ammonia21.com will update this page with live reporting from key sessions, including workshop outcomes and main messages from this year’s ATMOsphere Europe event.

  • Combining NH3 heating and cooling to shorten investment payback periods: On the second day of ATMOsphere Europe 2011 Dave Pearson of Star Refrigeration presented results from the application of a high-pressure heat pump solution using ammonia screw compressors for reducing the Nestlé UK Halifax factory’s refrigeration and heating energy demands. The project saves annually £250,000 on operating costs, allowing a 4-year investment payback period.

  • Active industry involvement needed to recognise refrigerant impact under Ecodesign: European Ecodesign regulations have the potential to address not only product efficiency, but also refrigerant emissions. Discussions at ATMOsphere Europe 2011 underscored, however, that more active involvement of the industry in the regulatory process is needed, if the precedent of including a low GWP bonus in the regulation for room air conditioners is to be replicated.

  • ATMOsphere 2011 – Commitment to natural refrigerants but need for good return on investment: On the second day of ATMOsphere Europe 2011 the End-Users session gathered several unique perspectives on natural refrigerant projects. Presentations from The Coca-Cola Company and Unilever voiced a clear commitment to natural refrigerants, whilst CSR-i explained their value to “future proof” a business. Robert Wiseman Dairies were invited to present a pioneering ammonia heat pump project.
Presentations available for download:

  • Ammonia technology case studies at ATMOsphere Europe 2011: With the latest figures for efficiency, costs as well as lessons learnt from their large ammonia heat pump at a Nestle food factory, Star Refrigeration is just one of the candidates presenting an innovative case study at ATMOsphere Europe 2011, the workshop on how to bring natural refrigerants faster to market.
Presentations available online:

  • Ammonia technology faster to Europe - ATMOsphere Europe 2011: For the 3rd consecutive year the ATMOsphere interactive workshop on natural refrigerants will take place in Brussels. From 11-12 October 2011, around 170 decision makers from industry and government will gather to discuss how to change the future of ammonia and other natural refrigerants. This year presentations, discussions and topics will have a clear focus on Europe and results will be shared worldwide in the form of a 10-point action plan.
All presentations ordered by session are available on ATMO.org or by clicking here.
