Mayekawa will present one of its latest ammonia refrigerant-based projects at ATMOsphere Europe 2015: a NH3 heat pump installation at a bakery plant located in Belgium. The heat pump has allowed for annual reductions of energy costs by 51% and CO2 emissions by 42%.

Taking place on 16 & 17 March in Brussels, the 6th edition of ATMOsphere Europe will once again serve as the forum for HVAC&R professionals to discuss the latest natural refrigerant market trends and policy issues, including the new F-Gas regulation. The programme will also feature parallel technology case studies sessions, including a Heat Pump session showcasing Mayekawa’s presentation about a bakery plant equipped with a NH3 heat pump for hot water production.

Natural refrigerants – NH3 heat pumps for hot water production by Jan Boone, Mayekawa

This case study presents the results of an installation of a NH3 heat pump at a bakery plant located in Mouscron-Belgium, which produces frozen bake-off bread products. In order to meet its daily hot water needs (quantity and temperature), Mayekawa chose to equip the bakery with a heat pump using ammonia as the refrigerant. The installation was done in February 2013.

The system has allowed for reductions in energy costs by 51% and for cuts in CO2 emissions of 378 tons per year. The efficiency of the heat pump has proven higher than other comparable technologies. A second additional heat pump with double the capacity is currently being installed and will be operational in the coming months.
