Defrost on demand: new HB Products sensor gets ready to hit market

Currently being tested at a cold store in Vejle, Denmark, the new HB Products defrost sensor can detect when defrost should begin and when the cycle has been optimally performed, resulting in energy savings to the end user.

The Claus Sørensen’s cold store in Vejle, Denmark is currently testing a special defrost sensor which is expected to earn the facility a 10% energy savings. The sensor is expected to be available for purchase in the spring of 2015.

There has been a need for this kind of sensor technology for a long time,” commented Mark Kristensen of HB Products, “since in most cases, defrost takes place according to a fixed schedule.”

Defrosting can be optimised based on the actual ice deposits on the evaporator, and thanks to this sensor technology, based on a core competence of HB Products - the capacitive measurement principle, energy and cost can be recovered by the end user.

Compatibility with all evaporators

The defrost sensor consists of an electronic part and a sensor element part, which in this case is a Teflon coated wire. The sensor is thus designed to fit all manufacturers’ evaporators, including Evapco, Güntner and Colmac Coil.

Another benefit is that installation is carried out in about 1 hour with traditional hand tools and does not require shutting down the system.

HBDF sensor designation with standard 10m wire length

The sensor designation is HBDF, and as standard is delivered with a wire length of 10m. The wire length is adjusted to the current evaporator size and placed in an area where ice typically deposits. The sensor requires a 24V AC/DC supply and transmits an analogue signal to the refrigeration system’s main control panel.

Since the sensor is flexible in regards to installation, it must be calibrated based on the individual installation. The calibration is easily carried out with a PC and a programming cable.
