Güntner drycoolers for higher production and greater reliability in biscuit production

The food producer Griesson de Beukelaer installed three GFW 090 drycoolers with EC motors to expand its production site in Wurzen, Germany. The new system supplied by Günter, equipped with unique Güntner Motor Management (GMM), has enabled Griesson to expand production capacity and maintain a stable ambient air temperature even with a greater load, reducing the existing risks association with cooling process to virtually zero.

Griesson de Beukelaer, a company with a 150-year history, chose to install a new system to improve the stability of the ambient air temperature and restrict the use of the existing ammonia system to process cooling. Wolfgang Lehmann, a sales engineer for Güntner in KG’s Eastern Region, explained that this separation of tasks makes good sense, “connecting the new system to the old one was an essential requirement for installation. From the outset, the plan was for one system to be able to compensate for possible malfunctions or downtimes of the other.”

Connecting the old system with the new one for greater reliability

Due to peak loads and higher than average external temperatures the previous ammonia refrigerating equipment did not always manage meet existing requirements and ensure that the ambient temperature in the production halls consistently ranged between 18 and 20°C.

In the new system, the pipe layout, including the shut-off devices, has been designed in such as way that in the event that a cold generator malfunctions, the other system can still be supplied with cold. Although under normal operating conditions the two systems are separated, they can be connected to each other by means of cold water discharge via the shut-off devices.

Unique system with Guntner Motor Management

The new installation features the following:

  • An X060-P2C-LH Quantum machine with a cooling power of 376 kW
  • Three GFW 090 Güntner drycoolers equipped with EC motors, each with an output rating of 180 kilowatts and a power consumption of 11.4 kilowatts
  • Güntner Motor Management (GMM) control of the fans, which allows the motors to be controlled and monitored as if a digital switching cabinet were available. The signals the fans respond to come from pressure of temperature sensors.

“With GMM, we are one step ahead of the market.” Lehmann continues, “The ease of handling and broad range of functions allow precise, rapid-response adjustment and better control of the fans. Naturally, the overall efficiency of the system benefits from this too.”

Risk of production downtime reduced to almost zero

As a result of the new installation not only was Griesson able to expand its production capacity and maintain a stable ambient air temperature even with a greater load, the company was able to reduce the existing risks associated with processes, such as the risk of production downtimes owing to excessive fluctuation in temperature, to virtually zero. In addition, the installation was assembled over the Christmas period when the belts were running at full speed for Easter sales.
