A leader in ice and snow engineering and application, providing innovative and total solutions, CTC Ice and Snow, a company of CTC Group, was selected by the Daqing Government (China) to design and build a new ice-training center featuring a state-of-the-art cooling system based on ammonia as a refrigerant. The project, valued over 8 million USD, is one of the largest ever sport refrigeration projects launched in Asia. + PHOTOS

CTC was chosen by the Government of Daqing (China) to develop the Daqing Speed Olympic Park project. The project, which commenced in 2011, required the design and building of one 400m x 13m speed oval, a 61m x 30m Olympic size ice rink, and 3 standard curling lanes. CTC also provided the installation and commissioning of all the systems for the ice and climatic conditions of the facility, as well as technical support and training.

The Daqing Speed Oval, first ammonia sport and leisure facility

With the aim of being used for both competition and leisure, the arena can accommodate up to 1800 people.

In looking for an environmentally friendly and energy efficient solution, CTC proposed and designed the tailor-made ammonia refrigeration system with a capacity of 2860 kW. The system encompasses four sets of screw compressors connected to two PHE ethylene glycol coolers. For cooling, the ethylene glycol is circled between the cooler and the ice surfaces by pumps. The evaporative condenser provides high efficient refrigerant condensation, close-loop cooling, combined with thermosyphon cooling system. CTC is using state of the art technologies from world leading strategic suppliers, such as Mycom, APV, Cimco, Evapco, Sports Systems/ Athletica, Zamboni, Jet Ice, Armstrong, Siemens.

Ice rink and speed oval upgradeable design

The design of the ice rink and the speed oval was based on the size, the maximum capacity it can hold and the thickness and temperature of the ice. The temperature of the ice surface is adjustable between -2°C and - 8°C depending on the activity on ice.

In addition, CTC had provided all necessary accessories for the good and safe operation of the ice surfaces, including dasher boards, ice resurfacer, ice edger, skate sharpener, water demineralization system, a rubber floor, seats, etc.

Ice rink integrated control system and BMS

The CTC ice rink control system enables:
  • Monitoring of the refrigeration plant and its energy consumption
  • Controlling remotely of lighting, heating, air conditioning, ventilation and dehumidification systems
  • Monitoring of the ice thickness and hardness, as well as the ice surface temperature according to the different requirements of each event
