Chile: 72% reduction on heat energy cost thanks to Emerson heat recovery system

Chile’s leading poultry processor has installed an ammonia heat pump system featuring two Vilter single screw compressors provided by Emerson Climate Technologies, Inc. Since its commissioning in January 2012, the use of the system has led to a 72% reduction of heat energy costs and 15,000,000 gallons of water saved annually.

Energy costs represent a significant portion of the operation costs in food production facilities. In the case of poultry processing, the typical facility purchases energy to heat the water needed for sanitation and heat-removal whilst the poultry is being processed.

Most poultry facilities use an ammonia refrigeration system to remove the heat induced by the production process. The heat removed from this activity is typically discharged into the environment. The current challenge in the industry is to try and recover the waste heat to use it for hot water generation.

Emerson heat recovery solution

The poultry producer reportedly managed to cut costs thanks to a highly-efficient waste-heat recovery system provided by Emerson CT containing Vilter™ single screw high-pressure ammonia compressors.

The refrigeration system installed in Chile sends liquid ammonia to the process where it removes heat from the poultry by boiling the refrigerant. The ammonia vapor is piped back into the refrigeration plant carrying the heat from the product. The vapor is compressed to a higher pressure through the function of compressors which then goes to a condenser and subcooler where the heat is removed from the gas.

The new ammonia heat pump system delivers hot water for sanitation at 126°F (52°C) using the heat extracted from refrigeration. The heat taken from the 14°F (-10°C) refrigeration load is increased to 126°F (52°C) in one-stage for heating. Since its commissioning in January 2012, the facility has been heating 350 gallons of water per minute.

Operational results in Chilean plant

It appears that the waste heat recovery provided some stability in regards to operating cost budgets, through reducing the process facility’s dependence on fossil fuels and lower operating cost.

It also reduces environmental pollution by:
  • 72% reduction of heat energy cost
  • 15,000,000 gallons of water saved annually
  • Waste heat recovery of 10.8 MMBtuh (3.2 MW)
  • 5.9 coefficient of performance (COP) heat pump
  • CO2 reduction of 3 million pounds per year
  • 15% higher efficiency than comparable technologies
