Last week, the Albertsons Carpinteria all-natural refrigerant store in California that features an ammonia primary system  was honoured with the prestigious ‘Best of the Best Award’ during the 2012 Environmental Achievement Awards by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) GreenChill Partnership.

The GreenChill Partnership, the US Environment Protection Agency (EPA) initiative aimed at reducing refrigerant emissions from supermarkets has grown to make up over 20% of the stores in the US, representing almost 7,700 supermarkets out of a total of 36,500 at the end of 2011.

Each year, the initiative singles out the best new GreenChill-certified store and honours it with the ‘Best of the Best Award’. Against the backdrop of a growing participation to the initiative, last week at the ‘2012 Environmental Achievement Awards’ the ‘Best of the Best Award’ was given to the Carpinteria store that recently achieved Platinum-Level store certification, the highest certification level that can be obtained for advanced refrigeration technology that prevents harmful refrigerant emissions. It is the first store in the nation to use low global warming natural refrigerants throughout:
  • Ammonia primary system by MAYEKAWA with 250 lbs (approximately 113 kg) of ammonia located in an outdoor enclosure that condenses CO2;
  • A water cooled system that allows for a reduction in refrigerant charge;
  • “Combined” CO2 refrigeration system with one vessel that contains liquid pumped to the low and medium temperature display cases and walk-in cabinets;
  • Propane (R290) in self-contained merchandisers

Other GreenChill awards

For the second consecutive year, Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market was honoured with GreenChill’s Store Certification Excellence Award for certifying more stores than any other grocer in the nation.

Whole Foods Market won GreenChill’s Superior Goal Achievement Award for exceeding their company’s annual target to reduce refrigerant emissions from their stores. Even though GreenChill Partners achieve emission rates well below national averages, all partners set ambitious, tough-to-achieve annual goals to continually improve their performance.

SUPERVALU, which operates Albertsons and Lucky stores, earned this year’s Distinguished Partner Award, which recognises the initiative’s supermarket partner company that goes above and beyond to advance the mission of the GreenChill Partnership.

Hill Phoenix was recognised with an award that was given for the first time in 2012 as the commercial systems manufacturer that achieved the most GreenChill certified advanced refrigeration systems in the past year.
