In the seafood processing hall at the European Seafood exhibition in Brussels ammonia was one of the discussed topics among the freezer, chiller and ice machine manufacturers. A growing demand for ammonia solutions in Europe and Asia for regulatory, environmental and cost reasons was observed by most of the exhibitors. ammonia21.com visited the trade show to present some of the companies exhibiting their latest ammonia innovations. + Picture gallery

While other industries might be still suffering from recessions in different areas of the world, the seafood industry and therefore seafood food processing industry does not seem to be affected according to several exhibitors. Seafood consumption worldwide reached an all-time high last year and is expected to increase by another 25% by 2015. Natural refrigerant solution providers can also expect a growing part of the cake as more and more can offer freezers and machines for the same price as traditional products. In addition, the customer is more conscious about the environment at least when it comes at the same price and to some extend forced by law to find alternatives.

Ammonia freezers and ice machines at European Seafood Exhibition

An entire hall has been dedicated to the processing industry at the European Seafood Exposition & Seafood Processing Europe 2012 in Brussels. Bringing together seafood buyers and sellers from all around the globe, the event is considered important by the freezer, chiller and ice machines manufacturer as they can meet the end-users, meaning their customers. The 20th edition takes place from 24-26 April and ammonia21.com stopped by to report about latest companies and product developments:

DSI: The Danish-based expert showcased their successful vertical and horizontal plate freezers that are also suitable for ammonia. In addition, they presented the new DSI CorePoint temperature measuring system. Useful for every of DSI’s vertical plate freezers, it can measure and control precisely the core temperature of the product and save therefore time, energy and CO2 emissions.

Mads Sigsgaard, Regional Sales Manager at DSI also confirmed a growing demand for ammonia for use in onshore and marine installations mainly for regulatory reasons including the ban of freon refrigerants. Especially for Russia on trawlers and for Norway onshore freezing systems the higher interest is remarkable, says Sigsgaard.

MAJA: Another leading flake ice machine manufacturer confirmed a clear trend for the “rediscovered” ammonia that has been used for over 100 years in industrial refrigeration. As many meat processing companies operate with an ammonia refrigeration system, the flake ice machines using also ammonia can be integrated more easily. German-based MAJA offers flake ice machines with rotating evaporators for direct ammonia operation for large capacities between 7.500 and 15.000kg/24h for integration into an existing NH3-multicompressor refrigeration unit.

Yantai Moon: Founded in 1956, the Chinese refrigeration and AC equipment manufacturer has been broadening their scope to NH3 systems and components over the last years. At the Seafood Show they showcased its ammonia double-stage LG screw refrigeration compressor that is available in various models and capacities. Already present in Asia, South-America and Africa, Yantai Moon is aiming to grow their international business also with a focus on natural refrigerants including ammonia and CO2.

Carnitech: Food processing equipment manufacturer Carnitech based in Denmark presented its IQF tunnel freezers also suitable for NH3. It is designed for two stage freezing, shell freezing and final deep freezing of sticky products. A companies representative for the Asian region stated that ammonia is considered as the best refrigerant for low temperature freezing and that the market is growing in India and other Asian countries.

Marel: 75% of Marel’s freezers that are suitable for all refrigerants are actually ordered with ammonia as the refrigerant. The sales manager at their booth explained that it is the preferred option for customers and manufacturers as ammonia offers a constant temperature level. According to him safety is not considered a big issue as the smell makes it easily detectable. He also confirmed that especially the Asian-Pacific market is looking more and more for climate-friendly solutions and prefers ammonia as it has been already in use for many years also in this region of the world. Marel offers around 15 types of freezers suitable for ammonia.
