In part 2 of our overview of the companies and products at the IIAR exhibition we see that ammonia is not just well-established in the US but that it could also get a second life in new application areas, as evidenced by the new partnerships between US and European companies, emerging new players and companies broadening their ammonia product portfolio.

At the ammonia-focused IIAR 2012 Industrial Refrigeration Conference & Exhibition in Wisconsin, ammonia21.com talked to different companies exhibiting, including:

HB Products and Parker: European-based pioneer for sensors and controls for industrial refrigeration, HB Products, officially announced its new cooperation agreement with Parker R/S at the IIAR. The US-based company will sell and distribute several of HB’s liquid and oil level sensors and switches for ammonia in North America. At the combined IIAR booth Parker already showcased HB’s comprehensive product range.

Danfoss: Known for its highly reliably check and expansion valves for ammonia, Danish-based expert Danfoss showcased its products at the IIAR.

Anatolii Mikhailov and Hernan Hidalgo also presented a technical paper talking about ammonia systems with CO2 as secondary coolant and explaining the design differences and potential savings compared to traditional ammonia installations or glycol layouts.

Carnot Refrigeration: Having already worked with advanced ammonia refrigeration systems for over 10 years in Canada, system manufacturer Carnot has just finalised a promising project applying an NH3/CO2 cascade system in a fruit and vegetable distribution center, a project that could significantly decrease cost and energy consumption. For new projects and systems in the US and Canada, the company is also looking for additional installers and qualified engineers with experience in this field.

Bitzer: German-based compressor manufacturer Bitzer is also highly active in the North American market with 3 manufacturing plants in the US. At their IIAR booth they informed participants about the company’s 85 series of screw compressor for ammonia. The representatives also confirmed the growing trend of using ammonia systems in supermarkets, something that was hardly imaginable in the US 5 years before.

Henry Technologies: Heat exchanger manufacturer Henry Technologies showcased material about its flooded shell and tube chillers suitable for ammonia as well as custom shell and tube heat exchangers. The Henry product range comprises a wide range of refrigeration valves, safety devices and filter driers.

Airgas: The ammonia supplier Airgas Specialty Products supplies the industrial refrigerant ammonia to the US and Canada. At the IIAR, they presented their broad range of related services and safety education.

Cimco: From design to installation, Canadian-based Cimco offers a complete package for industrial refrigeration systems for ice rinks, food & beverage and industrial cooling equipment. Ammonia is and will be one of the company’s main focus areas for the US and Canadian market.

Cool Air: Ammonia leak detector manufacturer Cool Air Incorporated showcased its systems for the ammonia refrigeration industry to IIAR participants. The Minnesota-based specialist offers system selection, installation and service for use in industrial freezers, coolers, production areas and engine rooms.

GfG Instrumentation: Already very much involved in ammonia refrigeration, GfG Instrumentation, one of the world leaders in gas detection and measurement technology, is also seeing a strongly growing market in the US.

Mueller: Missouri-based chiller and heat exchanger manufacturer Mueller was the only company exhibiting at the IIAR that did not see ammonia as a trend and growing market for their company.

Standard Xchange: Formerly known as ITT standard, the manufacturer of plate brazed heat exchangers Standard Xchange exhibited at the IIAR show to present their broad range of ammonia products.

Vahterus: Originally based in Finland, plate and shell heat exchanger manufacturer Vahterus’ business in the Americas region today accounts for 25%. They have now registered a new subsidiary based in the US to increase ammonia sales in this important market.

VaCom: With a stated mission to optimise energy usage using modern control techniques, Californian-based VaCom informed interested trade show visitors about their refrigeration and energy efficiency expertise, which relates to utilities, but also to commercial, institutional and industrial end-users.
