The Institute of Refrigeration is currently revising its safety code concerning the use of ammonia as a refrigerant. The revised code is expected to be published a few weeks after the institute launched a dedicated website on refrigerant leak prevention.

In ensuring the safe use of refrigerants, the UK-based Institute of Refrigeration (IoR) is currently revising its code of practice concerning the use of ammonia as a refrigerant.

Following revision of the European refrigeration safety standard BS EN 378:2008 "Refrigerating systems and heat pumps – Safety and environmental requirements", the IoR sought to revise its own codes of practice. Already in December 2008 the institute published revised codes of practice concerning refrigerants that are classified as low in toxicity with no, lower or higher flammability (classes A1, A2 and A3 respectively). Currently, the institute is revising its separate code of practice concerning compression refrigerating systems utilising ammonia. The revised code is due to be published before the end of January 2009.

The IoR ammonia code

The latest version (2002) of the code of practice concerning compression refrigerating systems utilising ammonia includes information on the following issues:
  • Sources of hazard
  • Design of components
  • System design and installation
  • System testing
  • Commissioning new installations
  • Inspection and maintenance
  • Documentation
  • Decommissioning
IoR website on refrigerant leak prevention

On 2 January 2009, the IoR working with the Carbon Trust, launched REAL Zero – Refrigerant Emission and Leakage Zero, a service offering practical assistance to everyone involved in purchasing, designing, installing, servicing, maintaining and owning refrigeration equipment to help them reduce refrigerant leaks.

Through a dedicated website, REAL Zero offers five guides with technical guidance and advice on how to achieve substantial reductions in refrigerant leakage.

Background

The Institute of Refrigeration is a UK-based independent organisation seeking to promote, improve and learn more about refrigeration and air conditioning. It is run for refrigeration and air conditioning professionals by refrigeration and air conditioning professionals.
