M&M Carnot Launches Low-Charge NH3 Industrial Chillers

M&M Carnot Refrigeration has launched a line of low-charge packaged ammonia/NH3 (R717) chillers for industrial refrigeration applications.

The new PureChill line offers capacities from 30 to 400TR (106 to 1,407kW), meeting the needs of a wide variety of applications, like food processing, food storage and beverage production.

PureChill units chills a food-grade secondary fluid, such as water or propylene glycol solution. This design reduces the ammonia charge to 1 to 2lbs/TR (0.13 to 0.26kg/kW) and keeps the ammonia away from the refrigerated area, M&M Carnot said in a statement.

The chiller units feature piston compressors with a “superior” performance at both full and part load operation, the company said. The system “is ideally matched with a cooling tower or fluid cooler with options for an evaporative condenser, air-cooled condenser, or adiabatic condenser to complete the system.”

The PureChill system is equipped with a PLC-based control system that has a touch screen interface as standard. The controls provide a “user interface with extensive status, logging, and multiple levels of password protection.” 

One of the benefits to the PureChill is that the units are easy to install. “The packaged system is factory assembled to allow for rapid installation and has an outdoor enclosure option with full access doors to provide easy maintenance and service.”

Maryland, U.S.-based M&M Refrigeration acquired Canadian CO2 (R744) specialist Carnot in June 2019. Both brands specialize in natural refrigerants, with M&M manufacturing industrial ammonia/CO2 cascade systemsand Carnot being a leading supplier of transcritical CO2 systems.
