This paper describes the application of ammonia as the primary refrigerant in a large scale air conditioning system servicing a local Council administration building in South East Queensland, Australia. The new NH3 based air conditioning system replaces two HCFC 22 based air conditioning systems. The secondary refrigerant is reticulated chilled water. The new plant incorporates energy recovery by means of discharge gas desuperheaters
