Former EU Climate Action Commissioner Connie Hedegaard – the driving force behind the EU’s F-Gas Regulation – has been elected to the Danfoss board. With natural refrigerants well placed to benefit from the HFC phase-down, the appointment follows the unveiling by the Danish company of a number of new climate-friendly HVAC&R technologies.

Hedegaard’s previous roles include Denmark’s Minister for Environment and Minister for Climate and Energy. She was the EU’s climate action commissioner from 2010 to 2014. During her five-year term at the European Commission, she was instrumental in passing the reviewed F-Gas Regulation, which entered into force last year.
New climate-friendly technology portfolio
The appointment represents the latest chapter in the company’s sustainable technology story. At Mostra Convegno in March, Danfoss put the ‘SmartStore’ concept at the heart of its new technology offering. Senior Sales & Marketing Director Philippe Duchêne told R744.com that by providing integrated control of refrigeration, HVAC and lighting systems, ‘SmartStore’ can deliver efficiency improvements of up to 50% in some supermarkets.
Having already reached optimal component performance for CO2 refrigeration systems, Danfoss is now introducing advanced system control and monitoring tools like the VLT Refrigeration Drive FC 103 to deliver further efficiency gains for compressors, condensers, evaporators and pumps, he explained.
Painting a global picture
Hedegaard’s international experience should serve Danfoss well as it grows in different parts of the world. In China,, for example, the market for natural refrigerant technologies is expected to pick up as existing HCFC equipment reaches the end of its lifecycle.
Speaking at China Refrigeration in Beijing last month, Bonny Dai, Senior Regional Marketing Manager (China) at Danfoss Commercial Compressors, said “we have already great experience and a wide portfolio of components for refrigeration applications. Danfoss has furthermore made investments also in compressor labs in order to […] investigate compressor solutions for both the residential and light commercial air conditioning and refrigeration applications".
Hailing Hedegaard’s appointment, Jørgen M. Clausen, chairman of the Danfoss board, said “because of her experience as a minister and an EU commissioner, Connie Hedegaard has a unique background. Internationally she is known for her extreme competence within climate, environmental and energy issues, and her skills are a very good match for Danfoss".
Hedegaard replaces Henrik Poulsen, CEO of Dong Energy. Other board members include Jørgen M. Clausen, William Ervin Hoover Jr., Kasper B. Rørsted, Björn K.O. Rosengren, Mads-Peter Clausen, Dr. Jürgen Reinert, Sandra Nørgaard Bertelsen, Jens Peter Nielsen and Lars Grau.
