The Cold Chain Innovation Hub (CCI-Hub), a Manila, Philippines-based center for sustainable HVAC&R technology exhibitions and training, has announced that it will hold its second online technical training workshop, focused on natural refrigerant-based technologies for industrial refrigeration in the Philippines.

The event will take place on March 23 at 2 pm Philippines Standard Time. The event is free to attend and registration is open. Those interested in registering can do so here.

CCI-Hub was launched in 2019 as part of an initiative to upgrade the food cold chain in the Philippines. Called the “Global Partnership for improving the Food Cold Chain in the Philippines,” the project is jointly led by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources of the Philippines (DENR). shecco, publisher of this website, is one of the project’s key executing partners.

The March 23 workshop will feature Stefan Jensen, Managing Director of Scantec Refrigeration Technologies, an industrial refrigeration supplier based in Brisbane, Australia; and Cesar Luis dL. Lim, Managing Partner of Kilojoule Consultants, an engineering consultancy firm based in Manila. The workshop will also feature presentations from industrial refrigeration suppliers GEA and Carrier.

The topics to be addressed include:

  • Low-charge Ammonia/NH3 (R717) direct expansion refrigeration systems
  • Transcritical CO2 technologies
  • High ambient temperature performance
  • Energy performance and benchmarking
  • Specific Energy Consumption (SEC)
  • Actual installations
  • Real world return on investment and financial viability analysis
  • High bay cold storage warehousing
  • Automated storage and retrieval systems

"We are excited to work with several leading experts from the industrial refrigeration sector on this event dedicated to support the development of food cold chain in Philippines," said Jan Dusek, Head of Global Partnership for the project. "We believe there is much to be learned and we expect over 250 online attendees from across Southeast Asia."

In October of last year, CCI-Hub held its first Technical Training Workshop on Advanced Technologies for Commercial Food Retail. "This time the focus will be on advanced technologies for the industrial refrigeration sector," according to CCI-Hub.

Focus on food cold chain

The “Global Partnership for improving the Food Cold Chain in the Philippines” project aims to identify, develop and stimulate the application of low-carbon, energy-efficient refrigeration technologies and business practices throughout the food cold chain to increase food safety and food security.

It is funded by US$2 million from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), with US$25 million in co-financing (in-kind, grants and loans).

The CCI-Hub will serve as the project’s main platform for providing an ecosystem of technical resources, training, knowledge sharing and stakeholder collaboration. On March 10, the Philippines’ Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) was announced as the official national entity that will host the CCI-Hub at its central office located in Metro Manila.
