The Dutch city of Hengelo has almost completed a new district heating network using ammonia heat pump technology.

Hengelo, a Dutch city in the east, has nearly completed a new district-heating network using ammonia heat pump technology.

“We have delivered our second decentralised energy centre: ‘DEC Noord’,” Rolf Broekman, a consultant at Qirion, told ammonia21.com. “This currently has two heat pumps and is prepared for five heat pumps. One-and-a-half years ago, we installed ‘DEC Zuid’, which has one heat pump but can be extended to three HPs."

Network company Firan, heating company Ennatuurlijk and the municipality Hengelo are conducting the district-heating project collaboratively. Qirion was responsible for designing and realising the district heating heat pump project.

“Each ammonia heat pump has a capacity of [1MW] and delivers rest heat from salt producer Nouryon to up to 70°C. This has a COP of 5.5 to 6.0, where the source of the extra heat is cooled from 40 to 25°C,” Broekman said.

The Heneglo ammonia heat pumps, from Sabroe (part of Johnson Controls), will eventually heat around 3,500 apartments in DEC Nord.

“The first heat pump installation in Hengelo [DEC Zuid] started operating in 2017. With the delivery of DEC Noord the project is finished. However, in the upcoming years, the heating network will be continuously expanded and more apartments and companies will be connected to the sustainable heating,” Broekman said.
