ATMOsphere Europe unveils ammonia case studies

The ATMOsphere Review Panel has selected ammonia case studies from Carrier, HB Products and UNDP to be presented at ATMOsphere Europe 2017.

The three case studies will be presented at the 8th edition of ATMOsphere Europe, which takes place in Berlin, Germany, on 25-27 September. Over 350 industry experts will attend the three-day conference (two half-days and one full day) to discuss the latest policy and market trends and technological innovations in the natural refrigerants world.

A session dedicated to the German market is among this year’s highlights.

The presentations are:

Carrier | Latest developments in usage of ammonia as a refrigerant in industrial applications by Julien Pourriere & Guillaume Burvingt

Profroid is a historical leader in industrial refrigeration applications with new capabilities with ammonia. The case study will introduce a new solution for low-temperature applications with an optimised NH3/CO2 cascade combining high performance with a reduced NH3 refrigerant charge.

HB Products | Capacitive measurement of void fraction by Michael Elstrøm & Jesper Nielsen

The world’s climate is at stake, with cooling, refrigeration and air conditioning accounting for 15%-25% of global electricity consumption. New methods therefore have to be developed to reduce energy consumption and increase system efficiency.

The case study will present the HBX sensor (electronic sight glass), measuring in real time the void fraction of the gas leaving the evaporator. The HBX sensor also controls the motorised inlet valve at the evaporator. With dry expansion (DX) systems, the HBX sensor manages a dry vapour gas enabling ammonia DX with a reduced amount of superheat.

The method is proven by several institutes (i.e. Technological Institute Aarhus, University of Gent, Technical University of Copenhagen) and more than 100 systems are in operation in Europe, the USA and Australia. This technology is yet to be presented at a European conference.

UNDP | Belarus – Low-charge ammonia-based cooling in administrative building by Selimcan Azizoglu

The demonstration Project ‘Indirect Low-Charge Ammonia Refrigeration Unit’ was implemented in cooperation with MyasoMolMontazh OJSC in Minsk. The project provided for the installation of a refrigeration system with intermediate coolant based on fluid coolers/chillers with a low refrigerant charge (ammonia R717, up to 100 kg) for room air conditioning in the administrative building.

It should be emphasised that the new ammonia-based refrigeration machine for the MyasoMolMontazh OJSC administrative building was made by a Belarusian company called Holodon CJSC. Thus this demonstration project paved the way for the production of a new line of refrigeration equipment in the country.

It served as an example of how the conversion to modern technology can initiate production development and improve the manufacturer’s competitive edge, as well as demonstrating ecological and economic advantages.
